Dock levelers are workhorses, but every leveler eventually reaches the point where repair stops making financial sense.
Repair makes sense when
- The structure and deck are sound
- Failure is isolated to hydraulics, springs, or lip mechanism
- The leveler is under 15 years old
Replace when
- Frame or pit damage is present
- Repair costs exceed 50% of replacement
- The leveler is undersized for current trailer mix
- You're upgrading to vertical-storing for cold storage or food safety
Don't forget the pit
Half of all leveler failures actually start in the pit — water intrusion, rusted angles, or failing welds. A new leveler in a bad pit lasts a fraction of its expected life.
